Snow Leopard Now Available for Pre-order at Amazon

Snow Leopard is expected next month and you can pre-order it from Amazon now to be sure you get it as soon as it is available. (Disclosure: MFM benefits from linked Amazon purchases as outlined below.) Since there are several Snow Leopard related products available, let's take a closer look at what they are.

For Current Leopard Users
This is the attractive offer: a single user edition for $29, a Family Pack (5 users) for $49 and Snow Leopard Server for $499. Those low prices make it reasonable to just give it a try without too much downside.

For Tiger or Older Users

This one is tougher to swallow if all you want is Snow Leopard. At this point, it is only bundled with iLife '09 and iWork '09 for $169 individual or $229 for Family Pack. That's actually a decent deal if you want all 3. With both iWork and iLife retailing for $79, you are getting Snow Leopard for $11. Or you can look at it as getting iWork and iLife for $40 more than the $129 normal OS X price. If you have an older Mac, see Apple's Tech Specs to see if your Mac can handle Snow Leopard. It wouldn't surprise me to see it for sale after the buzz wears off for the usual $129 on it's own.

Why Get Snow Leopard?
At this point, I'm not terribly blown away by the new features of Snow Leopard. I think in the end it will be remembered for getting Microsoft Exchange server support in Macs, which is a huge boon to worker bees wanting to use Macs on their business email systems. And I expect it will be remembered if it is used in the rumored iTablet product. But for $29, I'm willing to gamble that it will be worth it.

So Why Amazon?
I like to shop Amazon for several reasons:

  1. They almost always have the best prices. Example: Right now iLife is for sale there $53.49 instead of $79 list price.
  2. The shopping process is smooth once they have your data. Very smooth if you use 1-Click.
  3. Most of the time you can get slow free shipping.
  4. If you choose fast shipping, they usually time delivery of pre-orders for the first day it's available.
  5. It's out of state for me, so I don't pay sales tax with the order.
  6. They have the best user reviews (not too applicable for SL).

Of course, we like our readers to shop through our links at Amazon because they kick back 4% to us without raising your price a cent. Consider it throwing some change in MFM's metaphorical guitar case, but the money is actually Jeff Bezos'.

So there you have it: Get Snow Leopard as soon as it comes out and help MFM at the same time. What's not to like? Links are below.
