What Mac Stuff We Like to Buy From Dell - Wait a Minute, Dell!?

Quick Scan

Apple hasn't competed as aggressively with their displays.

Dell's displays are very good and 50-70% the price of Apple.

Dell's come with more features too, including multiple inputs, card readers, and picture in picture.

Apple could really use the competition.

What Mac Stuff We Like to Buy From Dell - Wait a Minute, Dell!?

Isn't Dell supposed to be Apple's new nemesis? Are we being traitors to Apple's cause? There's a dirty little secret out there among Mac owners: We buy Dell monitors.

Who hasn't walked into an Apple store and proclaimed how they would buy that 30" display if only you could afford it? They are glorious. Look at all that space! But at $1800 plus tax, that adds up to $1940 around here. Not the type of money I walk around with.

And of course the more sensible of us look to the Apple 23" and think that might be a good compromise. But still, it's $900 plus tax.

This points out the key reason to look to Dell: price. Their 30" goes for $1275 and their 24" goes for $569. And this is without the random Dell discounts that come and go like stray dogs. That's not to mention the 20" going for less than half the price of a 20" Apple display.

But is that it? Of course the Apple displays are the best, right? So are you paying for an inferior product? Not really. From the CNET review of the 2407WFP:

"Dell's 24-inch wide-screen LCD delivers excellent image quality and a ton of connectivity options, including video inputs and picture-in-picture settings. Add in a great price, and the Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP is the best value in its class."

Wait, what was that about connectivity options and video input? More from CNET

"Inputs include one upstream and two downstream USB 2.0 ports, DVI-D and VGA (analog) signal inputs, a 12-volt audio jack for connecting an optional Dell Sound Bar speaker, plus composite, component, and S-Video ports for connecting a VCR or DVD player. Along the left side of the monitor are two more USB 2.0 ports, and a 9-in-2 media card reader."

And wait a sec, let's back up. They have card readers and tv inputs? Plus they can do picture in picture and rotate the display? USB hub too? Lots of features that Apple could do well to emulate.

Well, what about the picture? There's an interesting sporadic conversation going on over at Macintouch on Dell monitors. Many people report that the screens are bright, some say too bright. But most people when shown a dim display next to a bright one will prefer the brighter one. The colors might not be as true, so if your work depends on super accurate color display, you may want to move along.

So what does this mean? I'm so confused.
I can tell you that I use a 20" Apple and a 24" Dell right next to each other hooked up to the same PowerMac and I prefer the Dell. Plus I am stoked to have a card reader built in for my digital camera.

In the bigger picture, I'm happy to have Mac users buy Dell displays to put market pressure on Apple to lower their prices and improve their products. These displays haven't been upgraded in too long. And with Apple canceling the FireWire iSight, Mac Pro and Mac Mini users are left without built in video iChats until Apple releases the next displays with (hopefully) built in iSights. Bad for them but good for me because I sold my iSight on eBay for above cost.

So am I a turncoat? Does the idea that you can get a 30" AND a 24" Dell display for the price of Apple's 30" display get you thinking? Know other products that are good buys from Dell (not PCs, smart aleck). Let us know in the Comments section below.

haha, the responses so far here are rather amusing. the dell and apple 20" / 24" / 30" panels are identical inside the box, they are both made by samsung. the dell offers height adjustment a plethora of i/o inc usb hub and card reader, the apple offers a silver shell and an apple logo. it seems that some of the die hard mac fans on here can't admit to that, and would prefer to believe that the apple displays are better in some magical unquantifiable way.

i know which i prefer, as i own 2x 24" dell panels but have used the apple displays as well and was put off by their ridiculous price tag and distinct lack of i/o.

I've been using Dell displays for years, both on the Mac and the PC. I'm what I'd consider to be your average "power user" of the machines, but I don't do any professional work on graphics or video.

IMO, for the price the Dells are a better value, even if they don't look exacly like mac products.

I saw someone mention that Dell isn't high in customer satisfaction. But I know as a corporate buyer I have been really satisfied with their support.

thom, you might not have read all responses but it seems that they use the same panel but with different settings (and apparently/possibly second choice). now, I'm not making a case for either monitor here (or any monitor, for that matter) but I do hear a lot from (motion) graphic design professionals and the apple monitors seem to be their favorite. sure, it may be their bias (most of them also work with macs) but I remember the time when Macs were known specifically for their market share amongst graphic designers: they shipped with millions+ of colors out of the box, while most Windows PCs (that was before Dell, mind you) were running on 256 colors and required a third party graphics card.
Anyway, it's hard to tell the difference, really, unless that's what you do professionally but I have both a 30" Dell and a 30" Apple Display side by side.
Out of the box, it is VERY clear that the Apple Display looks "better". the whites are white and the blacks are black. I'm sure there's much to fiddle with that Dell monitor and the inputs but that is also, again, one of the differences between Mac and Windows: Mac is easy to use but may be limited/costly to modify while Windows PCs are a bit more cumbersome to use but more flexible in terms of modifications.

Ok everyone... buying a desktop gives you an option playing around with options... but what about Macbooks? I have heard that the screen is grainy when video is played?

Is it true? I mean on a laptop you can't change anything... lemme know... I desperately want to buy a Macbook this Christmas...

Thanks...

Ankur, Macbooks have a great rich screen, but I wish they had a wider viewing angle. The graininess is a matter of the video resolution, not the screen.

The best answer for you is to go see one in a store and judge for yourself.

I have just got a Dell 2407 WFP Monitor off Ebay. I use it with a mac pro. I want to colour calibrate the monitor. However there seems to be no contrast setting, with just a brightness setting. In the Dell it shows both contrast and brightness calibration available. There are no mac drivers supplied with the monitor and there does not seem to be any on their site. I telephoned Dell and the guy on the phone was no use. Has anyone with a Mac any ideas what I should do.

Chris, I had the same problem and found this:

taken from dell website:

NOTES: You cannot change contrast on an active-matrix (thin film transistor [TFT]) display, such as your computer's display. (Contrast adjustments are only necessary on older passive-matrix displays.)

Pretty rediculous if you ask me....
