Untie Your Fingers with a Typing Tutor on Your Mac
Does your new compact Mac keyboard have your fingers in a knot? Get back to your peaking typing form with a free typing tutor.
This tip is mostly written for people that have bought a themselves a new macbook, or just wanna learn to type the 10-finger way. Writing with all 10 fingers is simply the fastest way to type your letters on a QWERTY keyboard. When learned properly, it allows you to type letters extremely fast and you are able to concentrate on what you are writing, instead of looking down on the keyboard all the time.
In my case, I have moved from a windows keyboard that I have been stuck with for nearly three years now to the compressed MacBook keyboard. I had some very solid 10 finger typing going on on my old keyboard, but after the change to my new keyboard, I kept hitting the wrong letters all the time, and after 2 weeks with a lot of writing, it was time to do something!
I browsed the net for a while, and after trying a couple of typing trainer applications, I found ATypeTrainer4Mac. It’s 100% freeware, and is available for download here on this page. Be sure to download the newest version 1.2.2.
On the page you will also find the application TypeTrainer4Mac which is also 100% freeware, but I recommend you to download aTypeTrainer4Mac, since it’s very easy to get a beta key for it.
All you have to do is send the developer an e-mail with your full name and full postal address, and then you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to set up the application with your beta key. The developers mail is as follows.

When you have the program up and running with your activated beta key, you can start learning/retrieving 10-finger typing. ATypeTrainer4Mac will have you doing exercises, and with each new exercise introducing new letters. Below the typing line, you got a virtual keyboard. This is NOT for writing, but to see which fingers you should use to type the different keys. 1 is thumb and so on. The program will modify the exercises, to focus on the keys letters you commonly mis-type.
Other nice features of the program is, that when you get tired of the exercises, you can change to typing a custom block of text! You can access this feature easily by pressing the gray select button, and then find your favorite text. You should prepare the text in .rtf format.
Hint: Your Mac's built in TextEdit can save as .rtf file!
This program got my 10 finger typing up and running again. I hope it will help you too!
