Printing selected text from Safari requires a 2 step command with textEdit in the middle. Firefox can do it straight away.
You can adjust how your text looks system wide in the Appearance pane of System Preferences.
You can manually adjust your Airport Express to just be on your network without extending the range of it.
Printing Text From a Web Page, Fuzzy Text and Using an Airport Express for iTunes Streaming
Welcome to My First Mac's Q&A column. It is said that Macs are easier to use, but they are still complex in their own right. Here are a few questions we have received lately from readers like you. Sometimes we reformat the questions for clarity and presentation.
This week Chuck answers your questions about printing text from a web page, fuzzy text and using an Airport Express for iTunes Streaming.

I am a switcher. How do you print only selected text from a web page? |
|
|
This one isn't as straight-forward as it should be in Safari. Highlight the text you want to print and open the "Safari" menu and navigate to Services, then Textedit and select "New Window Containing Selection". Your highlighted text will appear in a Textedit window where a quick Command-P will print your selected text. You may want to assign a keyboard shortcut to this in System Preferences if you use it a lot. Firefox uses can highlight their text, Command-P and then select "Print Selection Only" from the print dialog. |

The text on my screen looks fuzzy. How do I fix this? |
|
|
If the fonts on your screen look fuzzy, you may want to increase the point size at which Mac OS X smoothes fonts. Open "System Preferences" and click "Appearance". Experiment with the "Font Smoothing Style" selections to see what works best for you. |

I only want to use my Airport Express Base Station to stream my iTunes music from the computer to my speakers. Is it really necessary to have this unit connected up to the internet before it will work? | |
|
You do need to connect it to the same wireless network that your computer is on. In the Airport Utility application (Applications\Utilities\Airport Utility) select your Airport Express, then "Manual Setup". In the "Wireless" tab, select "Participate in a WDS network" from the "Wireless Mode" menu. This will connect the Airport Express to the existing network, but will not extend it. |

Your Comments:
I am a long-time Mac user and have very few problems. Recently a friend who has switched to Mac from PC has been asking me questions, including the one you attempt to answer above about printing text selected on a web page. I find that neither your Safari nor Firefox solutions work for me. They both sound reasonable, but nothing happened in either case when I tried to perform them. I am running system 10.4.11 (Tiger) and always keep my browser software up to date. Could it be that I need Leopard to do them successfully?
Thanks,
RL
