iLife '06 vs '08, Sending iTunes Tracks and Cleaning Your Screen

Welcome to My First Mac's Q&A column. It is said that Macs are easier to use, but they are still complex in their own right. Here are a few questions we have received lately from readers like you. Sometimes we reformat the questions for clarity and presentation.

This week we cover whether you should upgrade to iLife '08, how you can email music to a friend and how to clean our screen.

I just got a macbook with iLife '06. Is iLife '08 worth upgrading to right away?

My first question I would ask is $79 a lot of money to you? If it is, then I'd stick to iLife '06 until you feel yourself hitting it's limits. It could be that it will last you until iLife '09. If it's not a lot of money to you, just buy it. There's nothing life changing in it, but there's a bunch of little features that are nice-to-haves.

What limits? I'd say if you use up the themes you like in iWeb, iPhoto calendars and iDVD. Sometimes getting a new iLife is worth it just to get some fresh themes. Or
if your iPhoto library gets out of control and the new Event view will help make it more manageable.

Why should you upgrade? Two key reasons: iMovie HD is too intimidating, in which case the new iMovie might be just your speed, or you have .Mac and you really like the new Web Gallery feature. These two are worth the price of admission if they speak to you.

One last note about iMovie '08 which is maligned for being less capable than iMovie HD. I think it's the only way to go if you want to edit bits from many different miniDV tapes you have sitting around. There's a new feature where you can just drop in a tape and have iMovie record it to your library for later editing and then it rewinds the tape for storage. It's perfect for those of us who have stacks of tapes sitting around waiting for the time to import.

How do I email a track from iTunes to a friend?

First, in iTunes right-click (ctrl-click) on the song and select Show in Finder from the pop up menu. Now if you are using Mail, just drag the song file from your Finder window into an open email message or onto the Mail icon. It's ready to send.

If you ripped the track yourself from CD, they should be able to play it without problem. If it's a track from the iTunes Store, your buddy might need to authorize their computer on your account to play it. You can authorize up to 5 computers on your account.

Also, did you know you could email a song or album link from the iTunes Store to a friend? Go ahead and drag either the song or the album art to an open email message and it will drop in a web address that causes their web browser prompt their iTunes to go right to where you are in the store. Cool!

What should I use to clean my MacBook screen?

Apple recommends a soft cloth dampened with water. If that's not cutting it, try a microfiber cloth or paper towel. If you need to step it up, you can get iKlear from Klear Screen. It's $10 for 2 tiny bottles and up. Don't use a product with ammonia like Windex.

We read each question that comes in and reply to the ones that fit the scope of this column. We also save some questions for future columns.

Definitely do not use paper towel unless you like scratches on your screen.

Several people have reported the xtra abrasivness with the paper towel has been what they needed. But it would be wise to watch out for scratches.

I use a little chamois (?) cloth that I purchased from my local GameStop for $2. The sell them as PSP screen cleaning cloths, but they work wonders without any sort of cleaning solution.
