How Do I Get My iMovies on YouTube?

Making movies on your Mac is fun and easy, but how do you share them with the world? One free way is using YouTube. It's great because you don't have to have your own service or pay for a thing. In this article I’ll tell you how to put a movie onto YouTube in iLife 06’ and in iLife 08’.

So, you have just finished your award winning video of your father's birthday party and you want to put it on YouTube so your family in New York can watch it. Let's pick up in iMovie when you have finished editing.

iMovie HD from iLife '06

  1. Make sure your video is just how you like it, then click the share button in the menu bar.
  2. Select the Quicktime option.
  3. Click on the menu for your compression options and select web.
  4. You can save your movie to the desktop, your movies folder, or somewhere else.
  5. Now, find your movie and click it once then press apple+I to get its information.
  6. Make sure it is under 100 megabytes or YouTube will not accept it.
  7. Log in to YouTube and click on the “upload” button at the top of the page.
  8. Enter the name, category, tags and any other information you want for your video.
  9. Next click on “upload a video” once you have finished entering your videos information.
  10. Click on the “Choose File” button and choose your video file from were you saved it. Make sure its your compressed quicktime video and not the iMovie file.
  11. Lastly click on the “Upload Video” button, it may take a few minutes for your video to upload and it may take several hours for it to show up on YouTube.

iMovie 08’

  1. Make sure your video is just how you like it, then click the share button in the menu bar and select YouTube.
  2. Choose your YouTube account or create a new one
  3. Confirm your sign in.
  4. Select the category, name, description, and tags for your video.
  5. Select your publish size and click “Next”
  6. Now click the publish button.
  7. Your video will be ready to watch on YouTube in 2-120 minutes.

Still Confused? Try this video in Apple's website. It's a video tutorial for sharing from iMovie '08.

One last tip: iWeb '08 has an easy way to insert movies from YouTube into web pages created in iWeb. Try having YouTube host your videos and then inserting them into your web pages if you are worried about how much storage your web host provides and how much much bandwidth the movies will use.

When Aaron isn't on his MacBook Pro or his iBook, you might find him in a nearby Apple store helping the staff convert PC users.
