Tabs in Safari, Desktop Backgrounds, and Icon Previews

Quick Scan

To get a slideshow for your desktop background, select the photos in iPhoto, then click the Desktop button at the bottom of iPhoto. Choose iPhoto Selection from the Preference pane that comes up.

Go to Safari preferences to enable tabs.

Use "Show icon preview" in Finder's View>Show View Options menu selection to see icons that look like your images.

Finding Tabs in Safari, Rotating Desktop Backgrounds, and Icon Previews

Welcome to My First Mac's Q&A column. It is said that Macs are easier to use, but they are still complex in their own right. Here are a few questions we have received lately from readers like you. Sometimes we reformat the questions for clarity and presentation.

This week we have questions about rotating photos on the Desktop, using tabs in Safari and seeing the preview of an image for it's icon.

I notice the Desktop background can be set to rotate pictures from the preset Mac images. How can I have periodically changing images, based on my iPhoto albums?

When I select an Album in the Desktop and Screensaver Preference Pane, I can't select the "Change picture" box, so here's my work around. Select the photos you want to use in iPhoto, either from an album or in the library, then click the Desktop button in the Toolbar at the bottom of iPhoto. That will bring up the preference pane and this time, you want to select the "iPhoto Selection" from the top section. Now you can specify how often you want to change the pictures and if you want them randomly.

I've heard of using tabs in Safari, but I can't seem to find them. What's going on?

Sadly, by default tabs are turned off in Safari as is pop up blocking. I suggest you enable these features right after starting up your Mac for the first time. To enable tabs, just go the the Safari menu>Preferences>Tabs. I just check the first box, but you can experiment with the options that fit you best. Don't forget to look at those keyboard shortcuts while you are there.

Now you can start hitting cmd-T for a new tab or select it from the File menu. One great trick is to open a whole folder of bookmarks in one click by selecting the "Open in Tabs" from the bottom of a list of bookmarks.

In Windows I could always see the image of my photos as the icon. On my new Mac, I just see that jpeg icon. Can't I set it to see the actual photos?

That's no problem to do for it's just a setting to check off, although it only works in Icon View. Open your folder and make sure you are in Icon View. Then go to the View menu and select Show View Options… About half way down, check the box that says, "Show icon preview." You might also want to decide here to check the button at the top for whether you want this to be system wide or just in this folder.

Your Comments:

Hi there. Love my first Mac! I did as you suggested and added Firefox as a 2nd browser. Now, it's showing up as a "hard drive" icon on my desktop and on the dock. Why's it a hard drive icon? Can/Should I remove it?
Thanks,
MGM.

Michael: drag the Firefox application icon to your Applications folder, THEN eject the drive icon it came in. Now open and use it from the Applications folder.

Not sure where the right place to ask this is... but I've just jumped to the Mac after years in the Windows world. Your site has been a great resource - I hope you answer this question about how Firefox works on the Mac.

I use the Bookmarks Toolbar to stick my "quick picks" for fast access. In Windows, that bar included the icon for the website, making them easy to distinguish when I glanced at the bar. On the Mac, they are just text and it's much harder for me to see and locate the one I want.

Does Firefox on Mac support those icons? (I forget what they're called - but it's the same icon that's displayed on the tab, if the site has one). If not, does Safari?

Thanks!

Kendra, I just switched and had the same beef. You need to try a Firefox add-on called Mac Favion. It can give you the default brushed silver theme for Mac but with favicons enabled in the bookmarks toolbar.

HI,
I still have to learn how to use my new mac...
Can someone tell me please how to display the favicon logo on the pages I save from the net to the desktop?
Thanks

Kiki: not sure what you mean. Do you want the file icon to look like the favicon when seen on the desktop?

Hi Chris, thanks for your reaction. Yes, when I used to create a shortcut on the desktop in XP, I was able to see the website's logo (favicon). On my Mac I can only see their standard http @ sign logo, no matter which website the page is coming from.

Kiki, I think that would be a good example of where Windows has a better feature. I'm not aware of an easy way for that to happen on the Mac. See what happens when Leopard comes out. It seems Apple is putting effort into having icons be more informative in Lepoard. I don't know what they will do in this case.
