Exporting Photos From iPhoto, Finding Clip Art and Auto-Mounting Your External Drive

Welcome to My First Mac's Q&A column. It is said that Macs are easier to use, but they are still complex in their own right. Here are a few questions we have received lately from readers like you. Sometimes we reformat the questions for clarity and presentation.

This week Chuck answers your questions about transferring photos to a digital frame, getting clip art and automatically connecting to an external drive.

How do I transfer images from iPhoto to a memory card for use in a digital picture frame?

There are a number of ways to accomplish this. I would recommend creating a new photo album and placing the photos you would like to appear on the digital picture frame in it. Then mount your memory card on your Mac using a memory card reader. If you do not have a memory card reader you can pick one up at most any electronics or camera store. Many printers now also have a built-in card reader.

Then, in iPhoto, select your new photo album and in the "File" menu select "Export". In the resulting dialog box, select "File Export" then the format your digital picture frame supports (most likely JPG), size, quality, etc. Be sure to check the instructions of your digital picture frame as there may be a specific directory or sizes that the photos need to be in.

Where can I get clip art to use on my Mac?

If you have Microsoft Office, you have access to hundreds of clip art items. Simply select "Picture>Clip Art" from the "Insert" menu. If you don't have Office or are looking for more, you can do a Google search for "Free Clip Art" and find dozens of sites, although the quality is sketchy at best.

My personal favorite site for getting clip art and photos and more is iStockPhoto (http://www.istockphoto.com) which has thousands. There is a cost, but the quality is top-notch and is economical. Lastly, there are dozens of commercial packages that you can purchase that offer clip art such as Nova Art or Art Explosion sold at the Apple Store.

One thing to keep in mind is that clip art comes in a variety or file formats that will work on both Macs and PCs, so you may be able to use the old PC clip art you have sitting around. Also, vector clip art often comes in .eps format which is used by graphic design programs. If you don't have a vector program, stick to .jpg, .png and .tif.

I cannot seem to set up a persistent connection to my Linksys network drive. I have to connect everytime instead of it just being there when I boot up. How can I make it automatically connect?

To make an automatic connect to any remote volume or network drive, open "Accounts" in System Preferences. Click on the "Login Items" tab and simply drag & drop the remote volume or network drive into the window. Now every time you start your Mac it will automatically connect.

We read each question that comes in and reply to the ones that fit the scope of this column. We also save some questions for future columns.

Kathie, you would use the crop tool for that. It will go down in size but not up.
