And the MFM Christmas Mac Story Winner is…
… Stuart! Stuart hits the right notes of giving rather than receiving and spreading the Apple love among friends and family. Thanks to everyone who entered. There wasn't an obvious choice and they were all deserving. Here's Stuart's story:
"When I saw this contest on the 24th, I honestly did not expect myself to be posting an entry. I’ve got a year old Macbook Pro, I’ve already upgraded to Leopard, and my iPhone has all the accessories I need. I was content to sit back and enjoy a day of playing some new Wii games.
I was in for quite a surprise the next morning however. It seemed Old Saint Nick had an Apple Christmas in store for me after all.
The strange thing is, I didn’t even get any Apple products. It was all my friends and family which received the coveted shiny white goodies. I had several relatives receive brand new iPods, to which they all were immensely excited about. The interesting trend I noticed is that all the young-people in my family had iPods by now. This holiday season’s iPod sales were limited almost exclusively to older, first time iPod owners. My father and my uncles were surprised how easy iTunes made everything. They found that the act of ripping a CD, something that the tech crowd takes for granted, was shockingly fast and easy. At first they expressed worries that filling their iPod up would be cumbersome and expensive, but they were all pleasantly surprised.
The most pleasant surprise I got though was helping my family friends set up their new iMac. Even before it powered on they were impressed. The family surprised me the whole day with what they noticed. While most people comment on the sleek, slim design of the iMac case, this family was blown away… by how few cables there were. They had somehow expected that Macs would be more complex, and therefore somehow more cables would be needed.
As the day wore on, they seemed to take note in more and more things that Mac users take for granted. As we copied their files over from their old computer (than goodness for external hard drives), they were delighted by the default home folders. On their old system they had dumped every file they ever made in “My Documents”. Having an individual place for Documents, Music, Movies, Photos, and Downloads seemed like a novel, yet obvious way of doing things.
Overall, I had a very Mac filled Christmas… for not getting a single product made by Apple. No doubt I will get a few more phone calls in the coming days by friends seeking out a Mac guru (funny what 1 year of use and some RSS feeds can do for your reputation). No matter what the level of expertise with computers, I’ve been recommending all new Mac users towards My First Mac. This is a wonderful site and I’m glad I could be a part of this community. I hope everyone else had a fun, joyful, and Mac filled holiday. Merry Christmas!"
