You can update your computer's name in the Sharing Preference pane.

It's aeasy to sort bookmarks by name in Firefox with a right-click. It's more involved with Safari.

Try SilverFast and VueScan for Mac scanning apps.

Getting Your Computer's Name Back, Alphabetizing Bookmarks and Finding a Scanner Program

Categories: My First Mac Q&A

Welcome to My First Mac's Q&A column. It is said that Macs are easier to use, but they are still complex in their own right. Here are a few questions we have received lately from readers like you. Sometimes we reformat the questions for clarity and presentation.

This week Chuck answers your questions about getting your computer's name back, alphabetizing bookmarks and finding a scanner program.

I just recently recovered from something that happened to my Mac and now lost my computer's "name" - the one that shows on the log-in screen. How do I get it back?

Well, assuming there are not more severe problems, you should be able to go into the "Sharing" System Preference and update the "Computer Name" field to whatever you'd like it to be. If that doesn't work, you might have more severe problems.

How do I alphabetize bookmarks in Firefox? How about in Safari?

In Firefox, select a folder full of bookmarks in the left pane of the Bookmarks Manager window. The right pane will fill with that folder's contents. If you want to sort all the items in the right pane by name, just Control-click on an item in the right pane and choose Sort By Name. Firefox will first organize folders alphabetically, and then follow those folders with the bookmarks.

Safari is not as straight-forward as it is for FireFox. Select "Show All Bookmarks" from the Bookmarks menu. In Finder, create a new folder. You can then drag a folder of bookmarks to the new folder in Finder. Sort the Bookmarks by name and drag the folder back to Safari. For the Bookmarks to stay in alphabetical order, you cannot drag a list of bookmarks but the folder containing those Bookmarks. You might end up with a duplicate folder, but it is easy to delete it.

I love my new Mac, but I'm having trouble finding a good scanner program. Any suggestions?

The most popular scanning programs for Mac are SilverFast ($49/$74) and VueScan ($39.95/$79.95).
